Castles

Culture

Although castles proliferated during the Middle Ages, a castle did not serve only military purposes, but also as a residence for noble lords and the kings themselves. Although it could stand within a town, it was most common for it to be built in strategic places, usually on high ground. Terres de l'Ebre has fortifications, castles and towers that exemplify an era that includes Muslim constructions which were often later occupied by the Templars. You will find examples in Miravet, Tortosa, l'Ametlla de Mar, Horta de Sant Joan, Batea, Arnes or Corbera d'Ebre, which still stand as witnesses to this medieval landscape.
