Castell de Sant Jordi d'Alfama
Passeig del Castell, s/n 43860 L'Ametlla de Mar, Tarragona, Catalonia
Right beside the beach and the cliffs that line the coast of l'Ametlla de Mar stands the Castell de Sant Jordi d'Alfama. The origin of this fortress lies in the founding, in 1201, of the first house of the Order of Sant Jordi d'Alfama, created to defend the area from piracy.

More information
The castle was besieged several times, but its final destruction came in 1650, when it was bombarded from the sea. The defensive complex was completely rebuilt in the 18th century, which is why much of the structure has survived to this day.
Although the interior of the fortress is not open to visitors, a walk around it is a good way to savour its history, and also the coves and rocky landscape of the l'Ametlla de Mar coast.
