Itinerary 1. Secans del Montsià
La Galera will be the starting and finishing point of a circular route to do by car and discover the birds of this very distinctive area. Taking the TV-3314 road southwards, we pass through a mosaic of dry-farmed crops with olive and almond trees that are the remains of an ancient steppe plain.

They are the best place to see species such as Montagu's harrier, lesser kestrel, European roller and even the scarce and discreet black-winged kite, a bird whose appearances are irregular and hard to predict.
In fact, these would be the typical species of what must once have been a large flat area with little vegetation. Visiting the quarries and other workings we can find rock-dwelling species such as the blue rock thrush or the last black wheatears. The abundance of prey such as rabbits makes it a very attractive area for several species of birds of prey such as the booted eagle, Bonelli's eagle or the short-toed snake eagle.
The small rubbish tips or farms become an attractive spot for Egyptian vultures and griffon vultures. You need to drive along paying attention to every corner to discover the wildlife hidden here, easy to see in the open areas where, for example, we will see larks, crested larks, corn buntings or meadow pipits. We visit the area by driving along the roads and stopping at the various spots where birds gather. The abundance of olive trees means that in winter hundreds of thrushes, robins, warblers and song thrushes gather, trying to pick up the last olives fallen on the ground. The network of well-kept forest tracks will help us explore the Secans.
Phenology
Any time of year is good for visiting this area, but the abundance of food generated by the large expanses of olive groves means that the period between October and February is when there are the most birds. To enjoy the European roller or Montagu's harrier you will need to visit the Secans in late spring and early summer.
