Cala Llenya

place 4 Partida Santes Creus 43860 L'Ametlla de Mar, Tarragona, Catalonia

Cala Llenya, also known as Platja de l’Ampolla, is one of the most beautiful coves in L’Ametlla de Mar and the Terres de l’Ebre. But what makes it special compared with other small beaches and coves in the area? First, it remains in a natural, wild and unspoilt setting, full of pine woods and paths that run along its steep, indented coast. It also helps that its floor is a mix of fine sand and small pebbles, and that its crystal-clear waters reveal a rocky seabed where a great variety of animal species live half hidden. That also makes it a paradise for people who like to go snorkelling.

The beauty of Cala Llenya also lies in the rich variety of colour in its particular palette, combining the green of the pines, different shades of blue, the gold of the sand and the red of the rocks. Being just over two kilometres from the town centre of L’Ametlla de Mar also means it is not a very crowded cove. Its small size helps too, about 40 metres long by an average of 20 wide. But it is precisely its size, its rustic, half-unspoilt, half-wild texture, and the low level of occupancy it usually has that make it a cove with plenty of charm.

Cala Llenya, like many beaches and coves of the Terres de l’Ebre, is part of the Mediterranean path network, better known as the GR-92. From both ends of the cove, paths set off along the Mediterranean coast on a route of great natural beauty. From Cala Llenya you can also make a short hop to the neighbouring cove of Santes Creus, which you reach in a few minutes and which turns out to be a small pebble beach with a protected natural lagoon of great ecological interest and a large presence of endemic marine fauna.

Cala Llenya has a parking area, showers and a bar, is cleaned daily and holds the ‘Blue Flag’ quality certificate. You reach it by the N-340 road or the AP-7 motorway, exiting at L’Ametlla de Mar. Once off the motorway, head towards the port. You will pass a roundabout with a petrol station, and then a bridge. As soon as you cross the motorway bridge, take the first exit on the right and then turn towards the Roques Daurades housing estate and the Hotel Ametlla de Mar. After about four kilometres, follow the signs to Càmping Ametlla Village Platja i Cala Llenya... and you have arrived! While you are in the area, take the chance to visit this first-class campsite, as well as the marina of L’Ametlla de Mar and, above all, the fishing port and the shops of this seafaring town.
