Serres de Pàndols i Cavalls

place 43780 Gandesa, Terra Alta, Catalonia

The Serres de Pàndols i Cavalls are the natural continuation of the Ports massif to the north. These two ridges form a natural area of great interest in Catalonia. They have outstanding geological value, thanks to the types of rock formation that have shaped striking landscapes: the narrow gorge of the Canaletes River at la Fontcalda, the Vall del Navarro, the Puig Caballé, la Fou de la Càrgola and l'Agulla de Bot, among many others.

As for wildlife, the area is notable for the presence of the wild goat, Bonelli's eagle, the golden eagle, the vulture, the falcon, the red-billed chough, the otter and the wildcat.

They are also of undeniable historical and cultural interest, since one of the bloodiest battles of the Spanish Civil War, the Battle of the Ebro, was fought in these mountains. For this reason the Consorci Memorial de la Batalla de l'Ebre (Comebe) has opened up some of these natural sites as an open-air museum, part of the so-called Ruta de la Pau (Peace Route).
