Fontcalda Sanctuary

place 43780 Gandesa, Tarragona, Catalonia

The River Canaletes, as it passes the Fontcalda Sanctuary, narrows to form a small gorge with a spectacular landscape. The waters, which force their way between immense stone walls, form huge pools and natural swimming holes that tempt anyone walking in the area when it is hot.

More information

This place gets its name, la Fontcalda (“the hot spring”), from the hot thermal spring at the bottom of this narrow stretch.

Mineral-medicinal water flows from this spring at 25ºC - the waters contain chloride, calcium carbonate, magnesium sulphate and sodium chloride. There used to be an old spa here, a place of pilgrimage for those who believed in the healing, therapeutic qualities of the waters, with romeries (pilgrimages) that are still held today on the first Sunday of May.
