Modernista Wineries

Wine and Food

At the start of the 20th century, after the phylloxera crisis, farmers joined together in cooperatives and built wineries that looked like temples: the Wine Cathedrals. In Terra Alta, Cèsar Martinell, a disciple of Gaudí, designed two of the best known, and today they are still full of life and wine. The Sindicat Agrícola winery in Pinell de Brai is, for many, the Wine Cathedral par excellence. The Gandesa Cooperative Winery, considered Martinell's most singular work, was recognised in 2007 as one of the Seven Wonders of Catalonia.

The Costa Daurada has them too: in the Conca de Barberà (Barberà de la Conca, Sarral and l'Espluga de Francolí), the Priorat (Cornudella de Montsant and Falset), the Alt Camp (Nulles, Vila-rodona and Alió), the Baix Penedès (Llorenç del Penedès) and the Baix Camp (Cambrils). We tell you about them on the Costa Daurada website.

Below are the ones you can visit in Terres de l'Ebre.
