PGI Clementines of the Terres de l'Ebre
It is a hybrid between the common mandarin and the bitter orange that was introduced to the Terres de l'Ebre with the irrigation canals. In the 1960s this citrus fruit expanded greatly, an expansion that has lasted to this day. The regions of the south of Tarragona now market almost 99% of the citrus fruit produced in Catalonia.
The clementine fina, the hernandina and the clemenules are the fruits that have had Protected Geographical Indication since 1996. They are intensely coloured and have a high percentage of juice. In addition, the harsh winters mean they come out with a touch of acidity and a firm skin.
