RICE INTERPRETATION CENTRE, LA TORRA
In the 20th century, the cooperative movement appeared in the Ebro Delta and rice cooperatives sprang up in large numbers, practically one in every municipality. At the beginning of the 21st century, growing methods and marketing systems changed and the cooperatives had to merge in order to become more competitive. New factories were built, which led to the abandonment of the old Camarles cooperative and its factory.
Since then, the municipality has set itself the goal of recovering part of the facilities, as the building dates from the 19th century, and turning it partly into an interpretation centre on what the rice industry has meant for this area.
Finally, thanks in part to financial support from the LEADER programme of the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development (EAFRD), the centre opened its doors to the public on 30 April 2016.
The centre is on the outskirts of the village in a complex of buildings called "La Torra" that once belonged to the Finca La Granadella. This estate became one of the village's economic engines during the 19th and 20th centuries, owned by the De León family (County of Belascoain, begun in the 19th century by Don Diego de León y Navarrete)
As already mentioned, the Centre occupies the space of the former mill of the village's Rice Cooperative and has 1,400 square metres. Inside there are old rice-processing machines, furniture, explanatory panels and audiovisuals. There is also a shop, a space for a coffee and various services, such as offices and a multipurpose room for holding events of various kinds.
