Castell de Miravet
At the top of Miravet's old town stands this impressive fortress of Arab origin. Built by the Muslims in the 9th century, the castle was one of the last Islamic strongholds in Catalonia.
More information
In 1153 it was taken by Ramon Berenguer IV, who gave it to the Order of the Temple. During this period it was enlarged, giving it the appearance that, broadly speaking, it has kept to this day.
At the start of the 14th century, with the dissolution of the Templars and after a long siege by royal troops, it passed into the hands of the Hospitallers. Because of its strategic position it continued to play a part at various moments in history such as the Reapers' War (1640), the War of the Spanish Succession (1701-1715), the Carlist wars of the 19th century and the Battle of the Ebro.
The fortress is made up of several enclosures, notably the parade ground and the Romanesque chapel. From the castle there is a broad and beautiful view over the meander the Ebro makes as it passes through Miravet.
