Rock Art

Culture

Want to travel back in time and discover how people lived 8,000 years ago? Terres de l'Ebre is home to the rock paintings of the Ermita de la Pietat in Ulldecona, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1998, one of the most important groups of Levantine rock art on the Iberian Peninsula. In the Serra de Godall, near the Ermita de la Pietat, there are 11 Neolithic shelters with paintings containing 400 figures depicting various hunting scenes. The jewel in the crown? A figure of a deer in shelter 1, which stands out from the rest of the group for its vertical placement and the precise definition of its outlines. The Levantine paintings of the Serra de Godall capture a world of mythical stories directly linked to hunting, the means of subsistence of the time.

Where to find it

In the Ribera d'Ebre region there are also the rock paintings of Font Vilella in Tivissa, about 7 km from the town. At the bottom of the Vilella ravine lies a large esplanade with a spring of the same name, which was probably where the territory's first inhabitants settled.
