Celler Cooperatiu de Gandesa
Moving stories of struggle and perseverance in one of the Seven Wonders of Catalonia
A harmonious, balanced, spacious and bright winery, considered Cèsar Martinell's most distinctive work and recognised in 2007 as one of the Seven Wonders of Catalonia.
Designed on the initiative of the Sindicato de Cooperación Agrícola de Gandesa, and built thanks to the efforts of a number of local families who wanted to fight for a better future tied to farming and local winegrowing.
It is a Wine Cathedral without a basilica plan, without symmetrical layout and without a single main façade. Its exterior is mostly rendered and painted white, which sets off the brickwork of the plinths and the surrounds of the doors and windows, the green glazed tiles of the sills and the strength of the fascinating water tanks crowning the building. The roof, with shapes that evoke barrels and amphorae (or eggshells), is its most surprising feature.
A winery that today can tell of several chapters of history and life lived since it was built, with historical moments of all kinds that have shaped how it works. Even so, throughout all these years a story of perseverance and struggle prevails, to keep alive the effort and legacy of many generations of people. The story of a village, of people who have traditionally worked the land and who have made their own concepts such as collective work and courage.
